I am scheduled to have 7 teeth pulled on October 1st and I will be under anesthesia. What can I expect?

I have a fear of the dentist. I haven't had any work done by the dentist since I was 15 and I'm 30 now. I am going to have 7 teeth pulled in a little over a week. I am having it done by an Oral Surgeon so I can be put under anesthesia because I am so nervous. I don't think I could ever have my teeth removed with numbing alone. I wouldn't want to be awake to hear the scraping and drilling and to taste or smell anything.

I am having all four of my wisdom teeth removed, and one extra wisdom tooth that hasn't grown in yet, one molar in front of my bottom wisdom tooth and an upper tooth that is severely cracked and the gum is exposed. The two wisdom teeth on the bottom grew in decayed and have huge deep holes in them and the nerves are exposed. One of them is killing me as we speak.

What can I expect at my oral surgery appointment? Will I be able to feel ANY pain even though I'll be under anesthesia? What will I feel like after the surgery and how long is the recovery time?

Well, i had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled about a year ago in April and i was put to sleep for the whole thing (which was wonderful not to deal with the actual surgery itself). Nonetheless, what happened with me was that they stuck an IV into my arm (that's a huge needle attached to fluids) and they shot my mouth up with a local numbing agent and they stuck heart rate monitors on my chest and sides. the pain from the needle was brief and then i felt really tingly and uncomfortable...then i was out. When i woke up, i felt groggy and slept the rest of the day. I suggest that if you are extremely nervous, which i imagine you are, see if your doc will prescribe some Valium, or equivalent (an anti-anxiety medication), to calm you down. Don't worry about it all too much, you will feel so much better once it's all over and done with!
Reply:If you are under anesthesia you won't feel anything and you will be asleep, usually recovery time is about 1-2 hrs and you should not be able to feel anything except for possibly when you wake up. If you are awake then it just feels like a pullng sensation. Novacane is a good thing to ask for, and if you are afraid of needles you are very smart to go under anesthesia.
Reply:You wont feel any pain while under the anasthetic BUT afterwards im sorry to say, you will be in agony. I had 2 wisdom teeth removed about 2 months ago, in the chair just having my gums numbed up not being put to sleep and after the numbness wore off i was in utter agony for about a month. Painkillers are a god send during the healing time... Panadiene Forte is something that is often prescribed for any oral pain. Recovery time will probably be about a month untill you dont feel any pain and about 3 months untill your gums are completely healed... my gums are still open and healing, but i have no pain. PLEASE if you smoke, DONT while they are healing or you WILL get a dry socket, which is the most painful thing you will ever experience. Make sure you rinse your mouth out after every meal with warm salty water.

Good Luck with your surgery and i hope you have a fast recovery!
Reply:oh boy.. I've been there.

You'll feel as though you're waking up just as you've fallen asleep. It feels like absolutely no time has passed when you wake up. You're not going to be able to feel your mouth, but you will feel the blood, and you will have to swallow it ALL because you can't spit. When the numbness wears off, the pain will be excrutiating, and you will bleed like crazy (well i guess that depends if you keep breaking the blood clot or not. For about a week afterwards, you won't be able to open your mouth (only about halfway) so your food selection will be limited. Also, when the stitches start disolving, they might get caught in your food and it'll pull and hurt ALOT. Food will get stuck in the holes.

The anesthesia made my hair fall out a few months later as well. I hear its a rare side effect though. Good luck. It's hell while you're going through it, but you'll feel great and have a mouth of straight teeth to look forward to afterwards :D
Reply:When you're put under you wont feel and pain...or anything at all for that matter!

You will simply wake up and it will seem like time just flew by.

Now you will be numb and swollen....you lips and mouth will feel like its 10x's its normal size.

they'll give you strong pain killers to help with the pain afterwords.

but try not to worry about it too much! getting all this work done will be well worth it!

I have had 8 teeth pulled in total. 4 "i" teeth (the fang-like teeth) pulled when i was like 8yrs-i was awake for these!

Then my 4 wisdome teeth at 23yrs. I did all 4 at once and was put under aswell.

But i was one of those lucky basterds and had NO pain right after and not even in the days following!

So who knows...i'm sure you'll been fine and trust me it will all be well worth it in the end!

best of luck to you!
Reply:i had 8 of my teeth pulled out at the same time last year.

the experience wasnt quite that bad actually during the surgery. i didnt feel any pain coz i was sleeping the whole time! hehe :)

one tip is to wear something comfortable, so u can just go right straight to bed when u get home. since u wont really have the energy to change your clothes after u get out of surgery.

and expect about 2-3 days of just laying in bed, watching tv, %26amp; eating icecream for your recovery.

also, buy your favorite yogurt, ice cream, soup, other soft food %26amp; liquid NOW when ure still able to go grocery shopping. [when i had my teeth pulled out, i didnt know what to expect. so i didnt get food for my recovery in advance. my friends then had to go food shopping for me and they didnt know what i liked. so i was stuck with bad pudding and icky tasting drinks.]

i think i lost like 5 lbs.

good luck to YOU! you'll be fine! :)
Reply:It's normal to be nervous because you don't know what to expect!

Most people feel a tiny pinch in the arm for the IV, then the next thing they know they're waking up with a numb, gauze-filled mouth asking, "Well, when are you going to start?" Of course it sounds more like, "Wooob? Whabba oo shaawt?", but don't worry, we understand Gauze-eez!
