Having teeth pulled?

I am having my teeth pulled and they are going to sedate me to do it.How do they sedate you?A pill or I.V.,what?

Having teeth pulled?
Hugs to you. I hate the dentist.

I have had my wisdom teeth out and was scared to death. They gave me an IV. I remember asking the nurse if I would be put to sleep and she said no. Just an IV. I thought she was nuts! I didn't want to be awake for this!!! They put the IV in my arm and told me they would start in a few minuets. Next think I knew it was over. I was still in and out of it the rest of the day.

The same thing happened when I had to have a molar pulled.

Good luck.
Reply:they stick a needle in your arm and type it so it dosent come out. dont worry i went threw it and its not that bad
Reply:they will give you gas or an injection =the injection is easier as you are sleepier after it and won't be aware of the pain for awhile
Reply:Usually an IV. I had my wisdome teeth out all four and they gave me an IV and also some gas to help me relax.
Reply:I.V is how they sedated me i hate needles and its not that bad they told me to take 3 deep breaths and count back from 100 i got to 99 and then i remember waking up
Reply:The best way to go is what the Doc calls Twilight Gas. My doc put me on nitrious, then the I.V., next I know it is all done! I hate the dentist so it was easier than being awake. Depending on what you have removed- you should ask your dentist (or oral surgeon?) and know before you go.
Reply:The following is from an article on the web:

"there are several different methods that can be used. In sedation dentistry the 3 most common methods of sedation are IV sedation, oral sedation %26amp; inhalation sedation.

In IV (intravenous) sedation, the sedative is administered directly into the blood stream. The patient can sleep through all or most of the procedure. If needed, more sedative can be administered through the IV at any point during the visit. IV sedation is strong and its effects will therefore take longer to wear off. Also after having IV sedation you will most likely not have any memory of your procedure.

Until the medication wears off you should not drive so it is wise to bring someone to your appointment who can drive you home afterwards.

With oral sedation the sedative is weaker than the one given intravenously and it is given orally. Most individuals fall into a sleep like state and remain comfortable and relaxed during the procedure. Most people will not have much memory of their experience in the dentist’s chair. One disadvantage to oral sedation is that it becomes difficult to administer additional medication if it is needed.

The third and most common and well known method of sedation is often referred to as laughing gas. Laughing gas is a type of sedation that is inhaled. When the drug is inhaled it’s effects are to calm and relax, not necessarily to make you fall asleep. Inhaled sedation will not necessarily make you laugh, it is intended to make you feel so much at ease that you could feel like laughing if you wanted too. Since the patient is conscious with inhaled sedation, administering additional doses of the sedative is relatively simple. The effects of the sedative gas are much more temporary than those of other sedation methods and memory is commonly unaffected.
Reply:IV and then you will go to sleep, and the dentist will start drillin
Reply:You should be aware that anytime you are put "to sleep" by a doctor or dentist, there is a slight chance that you don't wake up. is it really worth it? try to tough it out if you can...
Reply:I had to have 4 teeth pulled before I got my braces. What they did with me was, they put this minty numbing gel on little Qtip things. These they placed against my gums where they were going to numb it. Then they gave me shots where the gel had been to numb it completely. It hurt a little but it wasn't too bad (and I have a fairly low pain threshhold :D).

If it starts to hurt again while they are pulling your teeth, tell them and they will give you another shot. I did that and I couldn't even feel it when they gave me the second shot! But it really helped.

Anyway good luck :)

*oh sorry, I didn't notice that you were actually being put under.. lol. I just had local anaesthetic..
