Getting my wisdom teeth pulled Friday, I have a couple of questions..?

I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled. They are not out yet, but underneath my gums. I am getting two pulled, and will be put under while they are taken out.

What will it be like after I get them out?

Will I experience nausea/vomiting afterwards?

Are there any major complications?

Does drinking pineapple juice really help for swelling?

The worst part about the experience I can remember, and the most annoying, is: food will get caught back there in the pits, where the teeth use to be. It's a pain for months, but heals up and isn't much of a problem after that. Never had nausea, and didn't have a lot of swelling either. Hope this helps, and good luck. You'll be fine in no time. Just don't smoke or drink from a straw for a little while, it could pop the stitches when you suck on the straw or the cigarette.
Reply:I remember the drugs took a while to wear off, and the first day I couldn't eat and food, besides liquid stuff like applesauce and soup. It did hurt, but I wasn't nauseas, and didn't vomit. I recovered pretty quickly, and was back to normal in just 2 or 3 days.

My sis, though, her mouth got infected, her checks swelled up like a chipmunk. But she had an absess, or some complication that made them have to break the tooth to remove it. It all depends on your situation, your teeth and how grown they are, and if they are tangled in the nerves.
Reply:You may have a little nausea, but it shouldn't be too bad. Vomiting is possible but I'm pretty sure it's rare. There aren't any major complications, you'll just have to be careful with what you eat. Soft foods are best for a week or two afterwards. I've never heard that about pineapple juice so I would say it's not likely that it helps for swelling. Hope this helps!
Reply:If they are infected, you will feel 100 times better when they are out! I know I did! You will be sore for hjust a few days and will have to eat soft foods and I dont think you can drink from a straw. The only nausea I got was from the pain medication (hydrocondone) because it was too strong for me and I asked the dentist to give me another instead and they did. No major complications at all and I would stay away from the pineapple juice. you dont want all that sugar settling on your gums that just had surgery!

i was scared to death since I have never had a surgery before but this was literally nothing, and not that bad :)
Reply:I have not heard of pineapple juice, personally I would think the acid would hurt like hell. The pain will suck, I had all 4 taken at one time. You can deal with it, take the pain meds!!! As soon as you can swallow the next one it helps if you take them before you start hurting. Also you Will only really want to eat like ice cream or jello. So buy it ahead you will not want to go anywhere for a few days after wards.
Reply:Be prepared for discomfort, but unless they have to bust your jaw in two (just kidding), it shouldn't be too bad. They usually give Tylenol 3 with codeine for pain. Several things can occur- yes, you can get stomach trouble from swallowing blood or sometimes pain makes people naseous. Some folks have a queasy reaction after waking from the being put under. Some folks don't or can't do codeine-based stuff- that made me sick more than the discomfort. Use lots of ice packs to keep down the swelling and rest.....don't use aspirin-based products cause it will make the bleeding worse. Stay away from carbonated drinks, drinks with citrus(it may sting).Don't smoke- it can give you dry socket- which REALLY hurts! East soft foods and rinse your mouth with warm salt water- it will help heal the wounds. Don't anticipate the worst, however, I've known folks who breezed through it with out a hitch! Good luck to you!
Reply:It is different for every person, but it depends on your oral surgeon and their techniques, and how you take care of yourself afterwards. the peak of swelling is usually 2-3 days after surgery and goes down afterwards. use ice packs right when you get home and for the next few days. in a few days use warms packs, warm compress to improve circulation around your face and will help bring down swelling. your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic and pain reliever. do not take both meds at the same time just in case you may be allergic to one of them. if you are taking vicodin get the NON generic med. works better than the generic. take only 1/2 tab first after you've had some food. hour later if you need, take the other half. as for major complications...dry socket. to avoid, make sure you follow all instructions the doctor gives you! do not use straws for a week and do not do excessive lifting or exercising. if you bleed a little bit the next few days after surgery, that is totally fine. as for the pineapple juice, we tell our patients to avoid it because it may sting the extraction sites...ouch! never heard about it to help with swelling. hope that helps!!
