i went to the dentist a few days ago for a check up and cleaning....and the dentist said i need to get all my wisdom teeth pulled out (i have 2 growing out visibly...my lower jaw and one is pretty much almost done growing out...the other is still growing)....but my wisdom teeth dont hurt at all....i asked him why i need to get them pulled out and he said because one of them is growing crooked? and its harder to clean and can have problems in the future (not just the crooked one...even if the wisdom tooth is growing fine)...but my previous dentist (we changes dentists...i dont know why...my dad made the decision...probably cause this new dentist is cheaper) that i saw last year for a check up and cleaning noticed my wisdom teeth and didnt say anything about that. he just tried poking them to see if they hurt but they dont hurt me at all so he just let me be. is my new dentist trying to take advantage of us? please help!
Why do you get wisdom teeth pulled out?
Some people never have to have them out. Unfortunately, 90% of people do.
The reason is widsom teeth grow in at an angle.
They are pointed at your back molars. When these wisdom teeth grow in they push against your molars. Not only does this cause extreme pain, but it begins to crush your molar.
Holes will appear and could possibly get infected. Serious complications can happen if your wisdom teeth push your other teeth too much.
Its not a painful procedure as they drug you up. (I was put to sleep)
After the procedure however there is intese swelling and some very painful cheeks. Be prepared for 5 days of apple sauce and soup =P
Whatever you do, do NOT use a straw! The sucking actions causes your now stiched up holes to be blown open cause massive pain and another trip to the doctors.
Good luck! One they are out you will never have to worry about them again.
Reply:yes, he could very well be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have had terrible experiences with dentists.
i would get three opinions before consenting....
my mouth is a wreck from these money hungry yankers.
Reply:If they are pointed toward your other teeth, they will cause you problems. Or if your mouth is just too short to have enough room for them.
Reply:SImply put, most people don't have room for them in their mouth and having teeth that far back can cause complication in cleaning. But when there is no pain, and the patient has enough room in their mouth. It simply becomes a dentists preference. Some believe that taking them out just makes more sense. Others use it as a money thing. Still others don't even bother with them. Ask your dentist to be honest with you about his opinion on if you keep them in. Ultimately it is your choice, they are your teeth.
Reply:Generally speaking, there's not enough room in your mouth for them. You see, if you alway those teeth to come in they would push on all your other teeth. Then you teeth would be crooked teeth.
Reply:He could be. It happens.
My wife took my daughter to a dentist who said she had 4 cavities. Since she brushes her teeth, my wife did not think so. She just said thank you and went to another dentist. The next one said her teeth were fine.
Some will just drill or pull good teeth for the payment. Not always, but often enough. Get a recommendation from another family.
The crooked teeth thing is possible, too. My dentist let mine stay as a teen. He later said he should have pulled them. They crowded my lower teeth while I was in college, and they have been crooked ever since.
Reply:Please, take your dentist's advice. I was very skeptical when my dentist first told me I needed my wisdom teeth removed. I waited about 4 years before I finally realized I needed them removed. I was starting to feel pain and it turned out they were starting to become impacted. It might not bother you now but if you wait too long your teeth will start to get crooked, and it can also cause nerve and bone damage. Plus you might not feel any pain now but as they start to grow in it will hurt, just as babies teethe. It wasn't the best time of my life after I got them removed but I'm glad I did!
Reply:my top 3 answer why you the 3rd molar or wisdom teeth has to go?
1. if there would be pain, any pain, be it pain on the involved tooth, or pain in the Temporomandibular Joint.
2. if it is causing harm to the involved tooth and the adjacent tooth, meaning if theres an area where mere toothbrush and floss couldnt reach tereby making that particular tooth susceptible to decay.
3. if the patient is to undergo, or have undergone orthodontic treatment and his xray shows that there would still be insuficient space for the 3rd molar to properly erupt.
just those 3 reason, if your problem falls on any of the 3, say goodbye to your wisdom teeth, however if it has no pain, no decay to occur with the adjacent teeth, you wont wear braces, no need to remove them.
Reply:some people never have problems with their wisdom teeth, but most people do. it is better to get them out while you are younger because your body is much better at healing.
but then again... i didn't pass wreb
Reply:The reason dentists tell you this is because these wisdom teeth can hurt you in the future, especially if there isn't enough room in your mouth to house them. The more they continue to push other teeth out of the way, the more you set yourself up for headaches (or even migranes), or worsened croweded teeth, which can hurt your self esteem.
You can opt to have them leave your teeth alone if they are not hurting you, however. It's up to you.
The good thing about having your teeth pulled? Mmmm...no possibility of crowding, no pain.
The bad thing about having your teeth pulled? It's minor surgery, and...well, it hurts. :(
Reply:the dentists in my city are so damn busy that i refuse to believe that they do procedures "just to get the money". they're gonna be way busy enough without faking things.
i would go to an oral surgeon for another opinion. not to a regular dentist. general dentists should NOT be pulling wisdom teeth.
as far as why we have wisdom teeth pulled, we are not cavemen anymore and do not need so many molars to survive. in the meantime, evolution is giving us smaller jaws while still trying to squeeze all 32 teeth in. for most people, wisdom teeth grow in slightly impacted (turned or twisted) and this will cause problems. i would have to agree that most people need their wisdom teeth pulled. personally, i had two pulled that were bothering me when i was 20 years old, the third has grown in and is fine (but i had braces and had other molars removed), and the fourth one has never grown. xrays show it way up in my jaw.
again, go to an oral surgeon, not a general dentist, for a second opinion and if he/she thinks they need pulled then have the surgeon do it.
Reply:I think your dentist is just trying to tell you to get them out before they start bothering you or cause any problems. Mine didn't bother me either, and when i got my braces off my orthodontist told me i better be getting them out soon because they'd push on my teeth and make them crooked. Of course i payed no attention to this and tried putting it off, but eventually they did start bothering me and they started pushing on my teeth and were making them crooked. I just had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out on Wed. and i was expecting the worst, and it wasn't bad at all. I was given 2 Triazolam pills and i hardly remember anything from the whole day. Get them out soon, your dentist knows what he's talking about. You'll save yourself the pain later.
Reply:if i were u go ask another dentist ....hve a checkup and see wat he or she says
Reply:I'd have them taken out as soon as you and your family can afford it. If you can afford it now--great! Go for it! I waited and had mine taken out when I was 21 and there was very little room left in my mouth for them. Save yourself some agony and time and get them out now. I don't know howold you are, but you reach an age (right around your early 20's) when your bones loose what little elasticity they have. That is, when you're younger your bones are softer and a little more forgiving. That is the perfect time to have major extractions.
Good luck.
