Having teeth pulled and freaking out about IV Sedation please help!?

Im getting 3 teeth pulled next Friday and Im totally freaking out! I have not been to the dentist in years because of my fear and now my teeth are not as nice as I would like them to be. The dentist told me I would be asleep through the whole thing, which begins my first fear...I dont like being put to sleep, I also have panic attacks and im already going to take a Lorazepam before going but im still scared.

Mostly im thinking I wont wake up and then im scared of how im going to feel when I do wake up and the pain! Im just a complete mess! Even now my heart is pounding! I guess I just need assurace that everything will be ok and it wont be so bad. I have to go back to work in 3 days after surgery so im hopeing it will be ok.

Any and all comments would be great! Thank you

Hey there! I also have panic attacks, and went through the same thing you are describing when I had four wisdom teeth out a few years ago. I wouldn't take a nerve pill before the surgery without talking to your doctor first, in case it would have a reaction with the medicines they are going to give you. When I had my surgery, it was my first time ever being put to sleep, and I was terrified. The doctors first gave me something in the IV to calm my nerves, though...I think it was Valium. They reassured me that I wouldn't feel a thing, and the last thing I remember after they told me that they were giving me something to calm me down was thinking, "Wow, this stuff works fast. I feel great." The next thing was waking up, drugged and happy. I was in no pain, and when the anaesthesia was wearing off, I felt so silly, like everything was there solely for my amusement. I was actually so shocked that I made it through the surgery...you see, I was certain that I wouldn't wake up. But I did, and you will too. If you decide that you need to take a nerve pill or something, though, do it a few hours before you go in to your surgery. And above all else, and I know this will sound crazy, enjoy it! You get to eat popsicles and ice cream, lay around, take pills that will make you feel funny, and have attention lavished on you by anybody who is around you. And don't stress too much...I felt so silly afterward for making it into such a big deal. Good luck!
Reply:at least you have the option of being asleep!!! don't worry though you'll wake up and your mouth will probably be numb so you won't feel anything right off. durring that time get the scrpt filled and follow directions. everything will be fine.
Reply:It's normal to be nervous. You will be asleep so fast, you won't remember a thing. When I had my wisdom teeth out, the gave me the stuff to knock m out, she said she'd be right back and then they were waking me up. when my husband had his done, I was in there. they gave him the sedative and I left right after and he didn't remember me leaving!

As for when you wake up, you won't be in pain, not right away at least. You will be groggy and out of it (why you need a driver with you). You'll probably just go home and go to sleep. Just be sure to take the pain meds and antibiotics on time. It will help keep the pain minimal, if you feel anything at all. After 3 days, you should be back to normal (although you'll still need to eat soft foods and liquids).

Good luck!
Reply:Wow I just have novicane and it made me not have feeling in my mouth. Dont worry though my friend had that. It is super routine they probably do it all the time and are experts.
Reply:don't worry the pill you take ahead of time will relax you, also most places will start you on laughing gas before the iv that will also relax you . once the medicine starts going through the iv you will be asleep in less than 5 minutes. keep your chin up. ha ha ha
Reply:Before you have your sedation you will probably be taking some pain medication so that when you wake up you won't be experiencing pain. Someone will be with you to take you home and look after you. You will be in well trained, qualified hands with a practitioner that has done this before so try not to worry! I had 5 teeth out the day after my honeymoon and went home and felt so good I ate some dinner. I didn't have swelling or bruising and as a hygienist I like to tell people (including my patients) that story since all you ever hear are the horror stories.

Do your best and try to relax and don't be afraid to tell the staff how you feel. If you need to listen to your IPOD or take deep breaths don't be shy about it. Follow the post operative instructions that they give you -- have them write them down if they don't give you a pamphlet or handout and you should be fine!!!

Reply:hello j3, you will be okay, iv solution sedative puts you in a twilight, but you won't recall anything. nor would you really want to be awake for this procedure. so don't fear being put to sleep. i advise that you do not take a lorazepam before you go, as it will only add to the sedation. i have panic attacks as you do, so i understand. you won't wake up in this massive pain, you will still have Novocaine to numb the areas. try not to be scared, this is a routine procedure. you may have some sore jaws, but you should be able to go back to work in 3 days. my daughter had all 4 pulled at once and she went out that night with her friends! try not to let anticipatory anxiety get to you! again, you will be fine! i hope this helped! :)
Reply:Always get your wisdom teeth removed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. IV sedation and LA work well together, but to find out the benefits of this treatment with wisdom tooth surgery go to http://www.oceansurgical.com.au/
