Im 17 and have 4 wisdom teeth. do they really need to be pulled out eventho they dont bother me?

my dentist said it would be better to remove them now that i'm still young..

my mom said she still has hers (she's 50) and it doesnt bother her at all. so she is against pulling my teeth out. she said the dentist just wanna earn more $$ from my teeth eventho its unnecessary.

HMMMMM.. now i dont know whats right? i certainly know that its gotta hurt so bad. i have healthy teeth since i first had one...

If they don't bother you, they don't need to be pulled out. Some people are just born with mouths that have big enough spaces for when the wisdom teeth come out. The reasons why they pull them is if they are hurting you when they are coming out and if you don't have any room for them in your mouth. There is no need, so you should go see another dentist. Your mom is right, the dentist only wants more money. It's sad how it is these days.
Reply:no! oh god no.

get a new dentist, or do what I do and never visit one.
Reply:If they aren't causing you any problems like pain or crookedness, it's perfectly fine to let them be. Dentists make money by working on your teeth, whether you need them to or not.
Reply:your dentist probably said just to get them out now bc youre still on your parents insurance and if you needed them out later when you didnt have great insurance, itd be really expensive. i didnt need them out at 17, but by the time i was 19 they killed and completely changed growing direction. they were impacted by this time and i had an awful recovery. try getting a second opinion and look at how theyre growing in the xray
Reply:One of my favorite sayings is If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If your mother has never had any problems with hers, you may not, either. Leave them.
Reply:I would say, don't get them removed if they are not bothering you. Go with the old saying - "if it ain't broke - don't fix it"
Reply:there is really no reason for pulling them out if they dont bother you...most people get them pulled but if you dont need to i wouldnt....as long as you keep taking care of them and they shouldnt ever bother you...
Reply:Ok I'm 21 now and I just got mine out like 4 weeks ago. My dentist told me to get them out when I was your age. I told them no because I was just too scared to be put out. 5 weeks ago mine started to get infected and it really didn't feel great. So I called up a place and I went in that day and they just gave me Novocaine and took them out right then and there. I felt no pain at all when they were taken out! I just felt some pain the first night and it really wasn't bad! There was only SOME pain the first day, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. I'm still not even fully healed after 4 weeks. I still have holes. But honestly. Not bad at all.

Your mom isn't too smart. Our ancestors AKA cavemen needed wisdom teeth for the crap they ate. Now we've evolved and don't need them anymore.

Go get em done its really not bad!
Reply:No. I'm 19 and I haven't had them taken out yet. It's kinda like your appendix or gall bladder-- you don't need them taken out until they start giving you problems.
Reply:It depends upon several factors. Do you have room in your jaw for them? Are they coming in straight? If not, they could cause problems with the root system, and end up being much more costly and painful. Ask to see the x-ray.

Mine are just coming in (near your Mom's age). They haven't negatively impacted me.
Reply:I've been told by more than one dentist, and a bunch of other people that if they don't bother you, you don't need them to be pulled out., and if your mom still has hers, you probably won't need to pull them. The only time ANY teeth should be pulled out is if they bother you.
Reply:lol!!

same with me...

im 17 and had all my wisdom teeth grown in when i was 16,

but my dentist said i dont have to pull them out because my teeth are perfectly straight,

and hasnt been causing any problems at all.

he said at the most, the only problem it seems i would have with them is brushing all the way back,

but they sell tiny brushes,

it works very well.

maybe you should ask another dentist's opinion.
Reply:I have a good perspective on this, because I never had problems with mine, but now I'm 50, and I've had to have 2 wisdom teeth pulled.

Here is why the Dentist is right (and your mom is wrong):

1. They crowd your mouth, causing your teeth to bunch up, which will eventually cause some of your teeth to start going sideways on ya. I have a tooth on the bottom front that is wacky at an angle because of this. It didn't happen until I got older. Check out your moms teeth, I'll bet she has something similar.

But the worst part:

2. The roots of Wisdom teeth continue to grow, and when you get older, they WILL cause a problem, and it can be HUGE.

What can happen is, the roots can grow into the main nerve that feeds your jaw.

So, when they go in later, to pull the wisdom teeth, there is a risk that they can damage that root, which means YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO FEEL YOUR JAW EVER AGAIN.

I'm not making this up, because I had the same concerns you did, so I did a bunch of research, because I was afraid to get mine done!

It's a lot trickier, with these roots being longer, and sometimes, they have to cut into your gums, peel them way back, and yank those roots deep out of your jawbone. Sometimes this can actually fracture the jawbone. It's a much more difficult and risky procedure when done on adults!!!

I had some problems with my last wisdom tooth removal, and also got Dry Socket (look that one up, it's no fun!)

So if I were you, I would save myself a whole lot of nightmares later in life, and just get it over with now. Plus, you are not paying for it now. When you get older, you may not be able to pay for it, it's damn expensive!!!

It's no fun, but at least you're not taking the risk of all the complications later in life, and in a few days, you will forget about the whole thing, so do it now!!!!

Your mom is wrong about the dentists agenda.

Dentists make buttloads of cash, so they don't need to talk people into getting more stuff done, they're busy enough already.
