Getting Wisdom Teeth Pulled?

I%26#039;m 17 and recently got x-rays from my dentist showing my bottom right wisdom tooth growing straight toward my molars. It%26#039;s not an immediate danger, but he said after a year or so, I%26#039;ll probably need that one pulled.

My first question is: I%26#039;ve already had six teeth pulled in the past... Is my mouth just smaller than the norm? I thought all mouths were roughly the same size.

My second question: Why is getting your wisdom tooth pulled so much more of a hassle compared to getting a normal tooth pulled?

And my third question: To those of you who have gone through this procedure, did you get the option of getting shots or getting anesthesia? I%26#039;d really prefer to be awake, just so I could see everything that%26#039;s going on. I hate that groggy feeling after anesthesia, so getting the shots would be preferable. Is it possible for me to do that, if it%26#039;s only one tooth?

Getting Wisdom Teeth Pulled?
Yep, most wisdom tooth extractions are done under local anesthesia while you are wide awake (just a shot to numb up your jaw). The majority of the time that%26#039;s all one needs. Some people are extra nervous and are willing to pay the (hefty) extra for intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, but most of the time it%26#039;s not needed.

I got all four of my wisdoms taken out under just local anesthesia as well, and my bottom two were impacted (horizontally jammed against the molars in front of them). No pain while the extractions were being done, some soreness and swelling afterwards but was easy to manage with OTC analgesics (Motrin in my case).

Here%26#039;s a tip: When you are getting the shots to numb your lower jaw, don%26#039;t let the doctor start pulling until your lower lip on the side being worked on is numb. The nerve that gives your lower lip feeling is the same nerve that gives the lower wisdom feeling. If your lower lip isn%26#039;t numb, your lower tooth isn%26#039;t numb. I think that%26#039;s where all the horror stories about pain during an extraction comes from.

Hope this helps, and good luck.
Reply:a bunch of my friends have had a lot of teeth pulled like you, so don%26#039;t worry about being abnormal, you are fine. for me, when i got my wisdom teeth out, all 4 of them, it was the first time i had ever gotten a tooth pulled. i think that getting your wisdom teeth out are a bigger deal because sometimes they are still under the surface so the dentist needs to cut into the skin and you need more stiches. my mother got her wisdom teeth out without anesthesia, and she said it was more painful and tramatic than childbirth, keep in mind she didn%26#039;t use any meds when she gave birth to me and my sister either. if you can, go for the anesthesia, my mom is still traumatized from it. i hope this helps, good luck with your operation!
Reply:Hi, i%26#039;ve gotten my wisdom teeth out, i would not suggest waiting for it to grow in, this will just cause more pain, and will increase your chances of getting infection while it heals. The best thing to do is get them out before they come in. I was put under, it was painless, and i enjoyed being sleepy when i was finished, your not going to be able to do much else, and it keeps the pain subsided!! You can either get the shot (being put under) or gassed, i wouldn%26#039;t recommend it tho, b/c you will prob hear n see everything, and be a lil uncomfortable with your mouth being pryde open. Also a lot of people act really goofy, so that may be quite embarrasing....well, hope all goes well!! P.S. you may have a small bite and maybe crooked teeth that may be why you had to have so many teeth pulled.

Oh %26amp; DON%26#039;T LISTEN to the first girl, it is NOT that painful, and im a whhhiimp, i didnt even need my prescription meds, i took a couple advil n was fine, don%26#039;t worry!!!
Reply:My dentist told me that changes in diet and dental hygiene have affected this.

Wisdom teeth were designed to grow into your mouth once you had matured a bit with the idea that we would all have lost some teeth (in the days before toothpaste and brushes, floss and dentists). Even if someone hadn%26#039;t lost teeth, their teeth might have become worn between teeth and not just on the surface of the molar (on a diet with much harder grains, etc). So wisdom teeth are nature%26#039;s way of making sure that we will have teeth to chew our food throough our adult years.

Wisdom teeth have a very long root which grows further down into the jaw bone. It would be extremely painful to remove without anasthetics. I have had three taken out with local anasthetic injections and they have been fine, even the one which he had to slice my gum open. They throbbed for a couple of days - remember to rinse with warm salt water.
Reply:They are generally thought to be called wisdom teeth because they appear so late.much later than the other teeth, at an age where people are supposedly wiser than as a child, when the other teeth erupt. Wisdom teeth are a hassle because they can become impacted of those impacted teeth they are classified under 3 different categories the one you have is Mesioangular impaction which is sometimes the most difficult to remove. They do give you the option I wouldnt choose Anesthesia. Just let them numb you up
Reply:do it now before it hurts. wisdom teeth removal is surgery they have to cut them out. they took all 3 of my wisdom teeth out while I was awake, find a doc who is willing to do that.
