I had an impacted wisdom tooth pulled and three teeth bedise it filled, should it still hurt?

I had an impacted wisdom tooth pulled, actually the dentist said it was still one of my 12 year molars (I'm 27) and he filled the 3 teeth beside it. Thar was on September 13th, its now the 21 and it still hurts quite bad. I went to th emergency room last weekend and the E.R. Doc said he didn't think it was a dry socket but he wasn't sure. He changed my antibiotic and gave me some more pain pills, but nothing seems to have worked. Any ideas?

As far as your extraction, its possible that you have a dry socket. Dry sockets occur when the blood clot that should have formed in the spot where the tooth was pulled, gets sucked out for whatever reason. Normally a dry socket is caused by smoking, sucking through a straw, or even sneezing.

As far as putting a teabag on the area, its only necessary if you are still bleeding, it slows the bleeding but isn't much use after that. There isn't anything special in there to help it heal.

For the fillings, it is possible to have sensitivity for a few weeks after the procedure, but I wouldn't think severe pain falls in that category. The fillings sometimes do show on the outside of the tooth. That depends on if the decay went from the inside out.

I hope some of this information helps you, but of course, I recommend calling your dentist and informing them of your situation and that you have been to the ER as well. They will be able to tell you what they recommend, usually it involves a follow up appointment. For now, try rinsing the extraction site out with a syringe if you have one. A mixture of 1 part peroxide and 2 parts water seem to be the best. This will help for now, until you can get to the doctor. If a syringe is not available, just rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Try not to brush too hard in the back of your mouth for now. And be careful flossing that area too. Good luck!
Reply:Hang tough, take the prescribed pain meds and talk to the dentist who performed the procedures. I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled at the same time and i can still remember the pain :( I dont think its unusual for it to still be painful especially with the 3 fillings also.
Reply:I would call the dentist and let him know what is going on. My dentist had me use wet teabags when i had my wisdom teeth out. It seemed to help somewhat.
