Do you have to have your wisdom teeth pulled?

My dentist makes it sound like you have to. Both my parents still have all their wisdom teeth and they see no reason why I should have mines pulled. What happens if you dont get them pulled?

What about people in undeveloped countries, they dont die from not having thier Wisdom teeth pulled, right?

Do you have to have your wisdom teeth pulled?
Not everybody needs to have their wisdom teeth pulled. If someone tells you that you do, ask them to explain with the x-ray what is wrong and what will happen if you don't have them pulled. Have your B.S. detector turn on full.

However... If you look even close to this photo, the dentist is not tryign to rip you off.

Why remove a wisdom tooth?

http://www.members.aol.com/swf08302/wizd... shows one reason. This is what can happen by the time you are 40 or 50 if you leave a wisdom tooth in place when it is impacted. The red arrows on the x-ray show the grey area that has decayed due to the wisdom tooth being present under the gum. The tooth shown is the exact same tooth shown in the x-ray, but turned so you can see the cavity. Food and bacteria can get down there and you can't clean it out. Eventually, it makes a cavity in the tooth next to the wisdom tooth and makes it so you have to have BOTH teeth removed
Reply:Good luck! Report It

Reply:The answer is NO YOU DON'T. I am waiting for mine to grow. Wisdom teeth...you have more wisdom...why pull it out.

Who first started to pull them out anyway?

More teeth is better. Regular adults have 32 teeth. That includes 8 wisdom teeth, because I only have 24 teeth.
Reply:i hope not! I HATE GETTIN TEETH PULLEED!!
Reply:depends on the size of your jaw and the size of your teeth. The only reason for pulling them is if your jaw is too small to acommodate all your teeth. Some people have no need to pull their wisdom teeth because they have a big mouth =)
Reply:lol! Well, my parents had theirs pulled of and now it will be my turn. You wouldn't die if you wouldn't pull yours out. But sometimes more wisdom teeth keeps growing and it actually forces your front teeth to be crooked so I don't wanna have crooked teeth so I think the best answer would be pull it off.

People in undeveloped countries, well I've never heard of a case relating to that but like some people it takes a very long time before their wisdom tooth actually grows.
Reply:your wisdom teeth can impact your existing teeth, pushing them together. if the dentst says to get them pulled, do it. the younger you are, the better. I was 15 when i had mine done and was eating solid food the next day. My wife on the other hand waited until she was 23 and ate soup for a week. she stayed swollen and it took longer for her to heal
Reply:It all depends on what your dentist says. I had to have mine pulled because there was no room for them.

-- and people in underdeveloped countries DO get teeth pulled, however, not in a cushy dentist office with novocaine!
Reply:NO YOU DON'T. The reason why they are regularly pulled is because often there is not enough room in the mouth for the extra set of teeth so it crowds the others (possibly pushing them out of alignment). The other reason is because it is difficult to brush that far back.

A good reason to keep them though is that your teeth support each other and when you pull your wisdom teeth out it removes a support structure for the rest of the teeth allowing them to shift a bit.
Reply:Well, you don't HAVE to do anything I suppose, but if you are having trouble, or pain you will need to have them removed. Sometimes they come in sideways and can cause pain, swelling and infection and if they are too close to the other teeth they can cause premature cavities and rotting. You can wait and see how they come in. I had to have 3 of mine surgically removed by an oral surgeon and it was NO PICNIC!!! I couldn't take the pain relievers because the meds make me so sick to my stomach, so the brain of a surgeon told me to just take some aspirin, nice guy. I would get some second, third opinions and ask about pain relief for afterwards, what are the options if you can't take tylenol 3, the usually prescribed pain killer -- what else is your dentist/surgeon willing to prescribe. Will your dentist be doing the pulling? Will you need an oral surgeon, are they impacted? You need to ask lots of questions before they start pulling/operating on you. What about infections afterward -- how clean do things look around the office/exam areas. Note things like washing hands and wearing gloves and face masks while they are preforming routine dental work. If things don't seem right look elsewhere for care.
Reply:Have you ever heard the wise comment that when you get all of your wisdom teeth in then half of your life is over?? Well, I have to say that if that was true, then I have many more years to live. In 13 days I will be 35. I had a wisdom tooth try to come in for 10 years, finally the dentist had to cut it out, which he did not want to do. When you lose teeth, your teeth will shift and it cause a gap in your teeth and of course a dentist will do their best to get you to buy a partial or bridge if so. But it takes a long time for the gap to be significant enough to notice. 20 years ago, I had to have a molar pulled and in 1999 the wisdom tooth was cut-out. I have a slight gap, not even wide enough for a toothpick to fit through. You do not have to have your wisdom teeth pulled unless you have medical condition. Most people have only 4 wisdom teeth and some do not have any for some reason. I have never heard of 8 wisdom teeth nor have I heard of having your wisdom teeth pulled because it is hard to brush back there??? What kind of dentist tells a patient that?? I guess the same dentist that will not give a patient something for pain after having teeth pulled.

Have your dentist to show you your full mouth X-RAY so you can see where your wisdom teeth are. I know where mine are and unfortunately if they start to come in I will have to have removed because mine are growing along with my gums instead of down like a tooth should. Good luck.
Reply:No you do not have to have them pulled, but dentist suggest that you have them pulled if they are giving you problems
Reply:For me yes, because I have a small mouth and when they grew in it was starting to crowd the rest of my teeth, no room for them and they hurt all the time and swell my gums so I got them taken out and im fine now. if they are not bothering u or doing the same thing then you shouldnt have to worry. I know people that have never had theirs taken out and they're way older than me. Some get just 2 taken out, all or none.
